My Journey

I ate more fat and lost more weight

I ate more fat and lost more weight

I used to avoid fat like it was poison. Low-fat yogurt. Dry toast. Chicken breast with all the skin trimmed off like I was scrubbing for surgery. Somewhere along the way, I bought the idea that fat was the problem, and if I wanted to stay lean. I had to eat as little of it as possible.

For a while, I thought I was doing the healthy thing. Low-fat everything. Light mayo. Dry salads. Meals that left me hungry an hour later and constantly looking for snacks. Meanwhile, I wasn’t getting leaner. I was getting softer, more tired, and more frustrated. Eventually, I started questioning everything. And it turns out, fat wasn’t the problem. It never was.

Where the fat fear came from

The fear of fat didn’t come out of nowhere. Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, fat got demonized. Headlines, government food pyramids, flashy cereal ads, all pushing the same idea: fat has more calories per gram, so eating it must make you fat.

The food industry cashed in. Low-fat products hit the shelves. Fat-free salad dressings loaded with sugar. Snack bars pretending to be health food. We were told this was better for us. And most of us listened. I did too. But reality had other plans.

Here’s what actually happened:

  • We cut fat … but started eating way more sugar and carbs
  • We got hungrier , so we snacked more
  • Obesity, diabetes , and chronic illness skyrocketed

Blaming fat for weight gain was like blaming the brakes for a car crash.

What eating fat actually does in your body

Once I stopped fearing fat and actually understood how it works, everything changed. Fat isn’t dangerous. It’s fuel. It’s structure. It’s part of every single cell in your body. Your brain? Mostly fat. Your hormones? Built on fat. Your body literally runs better on it.

When I started eating more fat from meat, eggs, butter, tallow, animal fat something unexpected happened: I felt full. My cravings dropped. I had energy that lasted. I wasn’t thinking about food every two hours. I didn’t crash after meals. It was the opposite of everything I’d been told.

Fat’s real role in the body:

  • Keeps you full and satisfied
  • Supports brain and hormone health
  • Slows digestion and stabilizes energy
  • Helps you burn fat more efficiently on low-carb diets

What actually makes you fat

It’s not fat that makes people fat, it’s the mix of carbs and fat together, especially when it comes in processed, packaged junk. Think pizza, pastries, chips, and fast food. High sugar, high fat, zero nutrition.

It’s not butter on your steak that’s the issue. It’s butter on top of white toast, with sugar-laced coffee, and a muffin on the side. That combo: sugar + fat is what breaks your metabolism and keeps your insulin jacked up all day.

Here’s what actually leads to weight gain:

  • Constant snacking (never letting your insulin settle)
  • Eating carbs with fat (especially ultra-processed junk)
  • Chasing hunger because your meals don’t satisfy
  • Overeating because your body’s always searching for real nutrients

Once I ditched the carbs and started fueling with fat and protein, my body flipped the switch. I leaned out, had more energy, and stopped obsessing over food.

What changed when I stopped fearing and started eating fat

When I made fat the foundation of my meals: fatty meat, eggs, butter, organs everything started working again. I was full after meals and stayed that way. I didn’t crash mid-afternoon. I wasn’t fighting cravings at night. My mental clarity improved. My workouts were stronger. I stopped needing snacks because I was finally eating food that actually fed me.

And here’s the kicker: I lost fat while eating more fat.

The key? I wasn’t mixing it with carbs. No sugar, no bread, no pasta, no fake health foods. Just real animal-based food; simple, heavy on fat, and exactly what my body had been needing all along.

What improved on high-fat, low-carb eating:

  • Zero cravings
  • More stable energy
  • Mental clarity and focus
  • Easier fat loss without starving
  • No more blood sugar crashes

Fat Also Helps You Absorb What You Need

There’s another side to this too. Some vitamins need fat in order to be absorbed properly, so cutting fat out can leave you short even if you’re eating what looks like a healthy diet. I’ve gone into this more on my vitamins page.

Eating Fat Conclusion

If you’re still scared of fat because you think it makes you fat, I’ve been there. I used to believe that too. But the truth is, fat isn’t the enemy. It’s the key. The real issue is ultra-processed junk, foods made in factories, full of carbs, seed oils, sugar, and lies.

When I switched to Keto, then Carnivore, everything got simpler. I stopped tracking. I stopped overthinking. I started eating like a human again. Fat became fuel, not fear. And that changed everything. Eating fat didn’t make me fat. Believing the wrong advice did!
