For most of my life, I thought eating healthy meant suffering. You know the drill. Tiny salads. Boring low-fat everything. Never feeling full. I thought that was just how it worked if you wanted to lose weight.
So when I first heard about keto, I didn’t really take it seriously. A diet that lets you eat fat? Like… real fat? Bacon? Steak? Cheese? Sounded like a dream or a heart attack waiting to happen. But spoiler alert… it kinda saved me.
No More Salads and Starving All Day
Let me back up a bit. Before keto, I was trying to eat clean. Loads of salads, low-fat meals, whole-wheat everything. I was always hungry. I’d eat and then two hours later I’d be standing in front of the fridge like I hadn’t eaten in days. I tried to stick it out. I figured hunger was just part of getting healthy. But it wore me down fast.
Then one day, I stumbled across some keto content online. It was different. The idea that fat could actually fuel your body and help burn fat blew my mind. I started digging. I learned about insulin, blood sugar spikes, and how carbs were not just making me fat but keeping me tired, hungry and foggy all the time. It clicked. This was the thing I had been missing.
But Of Course I Got It Wrong First
So what did I do? I went full steam ahead. No salads, no low-fat anything. I dove into fatty foods like a kid in a candy store.
Bacon for breakfast. Pork belly for lunch. Ribeye steak for dinner, fat and all. I was finally eating food I loved and feeling full for once. But here’s the catch… I was eating fat from morning to night without really understanding how keto works.
Turns out, keto isn’t just about eating fat. It’s about switching your body from running on sugar to running on fat. And that means you still need to be smart about what kind of fat, how much you’re eating, and when. But hey, I had to learn the hard way.
The Peanut Gallery Had Thoughts
Of course, everyone around me had an opinion. Colleagues would make comments like “ That can’t be good for you ” or “ You’re gonna clog your arteries.” One friend literally said, “ You’re gonna die soon. ”
I couldn’t help myself. I smiled and said, “ Bad news, mate. You’re gonna die too. But probably sooner with all the sugar you eat.” That shut her up for a bit. Sometimes I think my mouth works without thinking!
People still think fat makes you fat. But that’s just not true. Sugar and processed junk are the real problem. I was losing weight, feeling better and actually enjoying food again. But not everything was perfect.
My Cholesterol Skyrocketed and My Doctor Freaked Out
About three months in, I went for a blood test. My cholesterol was through the roof. My doctor looked at me like I was a ticking time bomb.
She showed me a stat from the American Heart Association saying I had a 10 percent risk of a heart attack within 10 years. Now, in typical me fashion, I replied without thinking, “So that means I’ve got a 90 percent chance of not having one?” She wasn’t amused.
She recommended I start taking statins immediately. But I wasn’t convinced. So I did what I always do. I researched. A lot. I learned the AHA gets money from Coke and Pepsi. Yes, really. Suddenly, I wasn’t so sure their advice was the gospel truth.
I kept digging and found something even more interesting. Cholesterol itself isn’t the problem. It’s actually a by-product of inflammation in the body. Meaning, it’s not the villain. It’s more like the fire alarm, not the fire.
I gave statins a try. Briefly. But the side effects were awful and they didn’t really help. I felt worse and still didn’t trust the long-term effects. So I stopped.
The Real Magic Came From Fasting
Even though I was losing weight and feeling better, I knew I could push things further. That’s when I discovered intermittent fasting. Now this, for me, was the game changer. I started with basic time-restricted eating. Then slowly worked up to 24-hour fasts. Eventually I did full six-day fasts. Just water. That’s it. No food for six days.
Sounds crazy, right? But honestly, I felt amazing. No hunger after the first day or two. My mind was sharp. My energy was steady. And the weight kept coming off. Best part? My blood results started improving across the board. Even the cholesterol stuff started to balance out. I was burning fat for fuel, giving my body a break from constantly digesting, and finally seeing the results I wanted.
What I Wish More People Knew
Keto changed everything for me. Not just because I could eat food I actually enjoyed, but because it put me back in control. I wasn’t at the mercy of cravings anymore. I wasn’t starving all day. I felt good in my body again.
But more than that, I learned that so much of what we’ve been told about health, fat, sugar and nutrition is just plain wrong. Fat doesn’t make you fat. Cholesterol isn’t the enemy. And you don’t have to suffer to get healthy. You just have to get smart.
This journey taught me to question everything, keep learning, and trust my body more. And if I can turn things around, anyone can. You just gotta start. And maybe stop eating cereal like it’s a food group. Just sayin’.
