How I went from salads and sneakers to something that actually worked. So here we are. Blog post number three. This one’s all about the moment I finally decided to stop messing around and do something about my health. Spoiler alert… it started strong and went sideways before I found what really worked for me.
When I Finally Said Enough Was Enough
It was time. I’d been through hospital visits, warnings from doctors, and a few scary wake-up calls. My body wasn’t just giving me signs. It was practically screaming at me. So I figured OK, I’m gonna sort this out. I jumped into the classic “ get healthy ” routine.
Step one? Diet and exercise. Sounds simple, right?
Kicking Things Off With Salad life
I went all in on the foods I thought were healthy. Salads every day. I actually loved it for the first couple of weeks. Tuna, sardines in olive oil, smoked salmon, feta cheese. It felt fresh and clean. Like I was finally doing what everyone said I should have done years ago.
I threw in whole wheat everything. Low fat. Low sugar. Basically low everything. My fridge looked like a fitness influencer’s Pinterest board. And for a short while, I felt proud of myself.
Then the hunger hit.
Not just the “I could eat” type. I mean the kind where you feel like you could demolish an entire buffet and still need dessert. A couple of hours after each meal, I was starving. Like full-on, hangry, watch-out world kind of hungry.
Getting Sweaty at the Gymn
I wasn’t just eating like a rabbit. I also jumped on the treadmill. First few days, I was basically fast-walking with some heavy breathing and lots of praying I wouldn’t fall off. But after a week, I started to jog. Lightly.
I pushed a few weights, but my main focus was running. I felt the buzz. That “I’m doing something good” feeling. And for the first time in a while, it actually felt like progress.
Stairway to… sore legs
We live on the eighth floor. At first, I could barely get past floor two without sounding like I was being chased by a bear. But slowly, I got better. I could walk all the way up. Then I ran a few flights. Eventually, I was going up and down more than once without collapsing.
I was sweating, I was sore, but I felt alive. Things were finally looking up.
My Doctor Couldn’t Believe What Happened
Even my doctor was impressed. The meds were working and my Triglyceride levels were finally coming down. Remember those weird yellow bumps I had on my elbows and under my eye? She thought they’d need to be removed by laser. Nope. They started disappearing on their own. I was dropping weight, feeling stronger, and not dreading every mirror I passed.
But like always, just when things were going good…
My Body Was Changing but Not All in Good Ways
Out of nowhere, my heel started popping. No pain. Just this weird clicking sound and an uncomfortable feeling every time I walked. Back to the hospital. The doc told me it was gas in my joint capsule. Something about my tendons rubbing on the wrong bits.
Long story short, running was off the table. I was gutted. He suggested swimming. I smiled politely but all I could think of was the random dead bird I saw floating in the pool last week. Yeah, and the floating leaves – hard pass.
The Salads Turned On Me and So Did My Energy
Let’s talk about salads again. We were not friends anymore. What started as love turned into complete boredom. I was sick of chewing leaves and feeling hungry ten minutes later. I told my doctor and she said, “ You can have some whole wheat pizza. ” And I thought… really? That’s the fix? Deep down I knew something wasn’t right. This wasn’t how health was supposed to feel.
The Real Game-Changer That Made It All Click
This is when everything changed. I discovered keto. At first, I thought it was just another internet trend. But I was desperate. So I started learning from reputable health sources. A lot. I went deep. Watched videos, read real stories, listened to doctors who talked like normal people.
And then it clicked.
It wasn’t fat that was the problem. It was sugar. It was carbs. The stuff I had been eating my whole life thinking it was “healthy” was actually wrecking me.
I learned about insulin resistance. About why I was always hungry. And how fat isn’t the enemy. My body didn’t need more low fat dressing. It needed real fuel. So I made the switch. I went keto. And for the first time in years, I actually felt full and focused.
Where things started to change
This was it. The real start. I wasn’t just chasing a number on the scale anymore. I was fixing the root problem. I felt better, slept a bit better, and wasn’t constantly thinking about my next meal. My energy wasn’t crashing all the time. I could finally focus without feeling like I needed a nap every hour.
It wasn’t perfect. Still isn’t. But these first steps were the ones that set everything in motion.
Why I Still Bother Moving Now
Looking back, the treadmill and those stairs were doing more for me than I realised at the time. I’ve written up why staying active matters so much as you get older, and some simple ways to start, over on my exercise page.
My First Real Steps Toward Health Final thoughts
My journey didn’t start in a straight line. It was more like zigzags, U-turns, and the occasional crash into a wall. I tried what the world told me was healthy. And when it didn’t work, I kept digging. That digging led me to keto, fasting, and eating real food. That was the real turning point.
So if you’re stuck, frustrated, and wondering why nothing seems to work… maybe it’s time to question the “healthy” stuff you’ve been told. It might just change everything. Let’s be honest. If I can figure this out after eating cereal by the box, there’s hope for anyone.
